Obesity is defined as a condition in which there is an excess of body fat. This results in undesirable body shape which is considered a very big deal for most people especially for women. However, obesity affects all age groups and it has now become a worlwide problem.

Some causes of obesity are:

Bad eating behaviour
Lack of exercise
Psychological conditions
Genetic
Medication e.g. steroids, anti-convulsants (to treat and prevent fits/seizures)

To classify ourselves whether we are included in the overweight category, we could find out by calculating our Body Mass Index (BMI). The table shown below is the classification of weight by Body Mass Index.

Classification of weight by BMI

Classification BMI (kg/m2) Adeverse health risks
Underweight <18.5 Low
Normal 18.5-24.9 Average

Overweight:

25
Pre-obese 25-29.9 Increased
Obese I 30-34.9 Moderate
Obese II 35-35.9 Severe

Obese III

40 Very severe

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m2). E.g. if your weight is 65 kg  and your height is 1.52 m, therefor your BMI is calculated as = 65/(1.52 x 1.52)= 28.1 kg/m2.

A study made by Janet D. Latner from her book "The study, Stigma and Childhood Obesity: Forty Years and Counting", obese children disliked more today than 40 years ago. Girls disliked their obese peers more than boys, and thin peers were seen as more likeable than when the study was conducted in 1961. The study was conducted from November 2000 to August 2001.  She added that children attributed negative characteristics such as sloppiness and nastiness to obese children. Even children as young as three years of age described drawings of chubby children negatively.
